AROMATHERAPY FOR CYCLISTS - continued

Hydrosols are a delightful addition to the water bottle. Hydrosols are the aromatic waters that are reclaimed at the end of the distillation process, and contain properties from both the fresh plant and the essential oil. Just 1 to 2 Tablespoons of Rosemary or Lavender hydrosol in a quart of water can boost its revitalizing effect.

Because hydrosols match the natural pH of the skin, they work beautifully as hydrating sprays. Lavender, Peppermint (Mentha x. piperitas), Rosemary and Witch Hazel are cooling and rejuvenating. German or Roman Chamomile (Matricaria recutita or Chamaemelum nobile) and Blue Artemis (Artemisia arborescens) are anti-inflammatory and regenerative to damaged skin.

The down side of hydrosols is that they will degrade in heat over time. To extend shelf life, it is best to refrigerate hydrosols between uses or add about 5% grain alcohol.

While none of these suggestions are meant to replace medical advice or treatment, using plant-based remedies for many cycling ailments is an effective, gentle and aromatic complement to conventional first aid.
