All Natural Aromatherapy Household Cleaners

By Christine Ziegler

A market research study done over a decade ago found that 89% of Americans were concerned about the environmental impact of the products they purchase. That still remains true today, and the numbers have even increased as we become more educated about the potential negative effects and impacts of our choices in consumer goods and general lifestyle.

One of the biggest challenges is cutting through the hype and finding products that REALLY are healthy and/or environmentally sound. There are many intentionally misleading marketing campaigns and advertisements which makes it difficult for the consumer who is trying to make a conscious choice to buy green. One way to combat this onslaught of expensive and dangerous products is to buy basic and make what you can yourself.

Housecleaning supplies are some of the most toxic products in the household. Housecleaning supplies are some of the easiest and most inexpensive items to make. Using natural homemade cleaners out of basic ingredients many have in the home already gets our homes just as clean as the major market products, yet are lot safer and a lot less money too!

Essential oils and hydrosols make great additions to the basic housecleaner recipes. Not only do they impart a wonderful scent into the home, many of them also have disinfectant and antiseptic properties. Some have been scientifically proven to be powerful anti-bacterial/anti-microbial agents (such as Clove bud), and others have very strong scientific evidence in their favor suggesting they are anti-viral (such as Oregano).

My cleaning staples:

These are the basic ingredients that I keep on hand for cleaning at all times:
